MORE ABOUT CHRISTINE AND HER WORK

Christine’s stylised, contemporary paintings are highly decorative. Her work is characterised by strong lines and shapes, flattened planes and the use of vibrant colour, the latter influenced by a childhood in the Caribbean.

She uses tissue to loosely block in areas of colour, relishing the unexpected shapes which emerge from torn edges and overlapping areas. The original composition is then brought back into focus by applying layers of acrylic paint and, finally, drawing in the finer lines with water-soluble Neocolour.

Christine draws inspiration from her environment: the Chiltern Hills, views from the Ridgeway, the patterns of fields scored by furrows and bounded by hedgerows, the bare trees of winter, the colours of crops and the seasons. She also draws and paints still lifes, often including flowers for their exuberant colours and organic shapes.

Her background is in design and illustration (First Class Hons Degree, Manchester, 1982). Most of her illustrations feature in publications for environment and development organisations (such as IUCN in Geneva and IIED in London).

In 1998, she won the Sunday Times/British Airways Competition to design a tailfin for BA as part of its ‘Global Images’ campaign. Her artwork, inspired by British canal art and titled ‘Grand Union’, decorated BA tailfins and buses for several years.

She now concentrates on landscape and still life painting and exhibits in Open Studios, local galleries and at various art fairs and festivals, including the Affordable Art Fair in London in March 2011. In early 2010, she had a solo show at Priory House (Central Bedfordshire Council Offices). In 2007, her painting ‘Chalk cutting, Chiltern Hills’ won first prize in a competition organized by Bucks County Museum entitled ‘Visions of Buckinghamshire’.
